Технология контурных шрифтов, разработанная фирмой Apple Computer в 1991 г. Лицензирована корпорацией Microsoft для использования в системе Microsoft Windows 3.1 и выше. Технология TrueType также включена в ОС Macintosh System 7.0, что позволяет переносить документы между этими двумя системами. Кроме того, TrueType применяется в языке описания страниц Microsoft TrueImage. В отличие от большинства технологий контурных шрифтов, которые требуют применения специфической технологии хинтования, TrueType является обобщенным языком, который поддерживает различные технологии хинтования, что делает его очень гибким в работе. Достоинствами TrueType технологии являются: возможность получения высококачественных шрифтов, удовлетворяющих требованиям профессионалов в области полиграфии и дизайна; открытость, включающая в себя полную документацию и возможность использования без дополнительных платежей; доступность на рынке высококачественных TrueType-шрифтов третьих фирм; доступность программных средств для разработки собственных шрифтов.
